Crystal Palace Football Club, commonly known as Palace, is a professional football team based in Selhurst, in the Borough of Croydon, South London, England. They currently compete in the Premier League, the highest level of English football. The club was founded in 1861 at the renowned Crystal Palace Exhibition building and initially played their home games within its grounds, including using the FA Cup Final stadium, until 1915 when the outbreak of the First World War necessitated their relocation. In 1924, they settled at their current home ground, Selhurst Park. After an initial period in the Southern League, Palace joined the Football League in 1920 and have predominantly competed in the top two tiers of English football. Since 1964, they have only spent three seasons outside of the second tier. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the club experienced their most successful period, achieving a historic third-place finish in the First Division (now the Premier League) in the 1990-91 season. Despite their achievements, they narrowly missed out on UEFA Cup qualification due to limited European spots for English clubs following the lifting of the UEFA ban after the Heysel Stadium disaster. This era also saw Palace reach the 1990 FA Cup Final, where they were runners-up after a replay. Additionally, they were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992. Following relegation from the Premier League in 1998, Palace faced financial difficulties, resulting in two administrations in 1999 and 2010. However, the club managed to recover and returned to the Premier League in 2013, where they have remained ever since. In 2016, they reached another FA Cup final, finishing as runners-up to Manchester United. Initially clad in claret and blue, Palace changed their kit colors to the iconic red and blue vertical stripes in 1973, which they still wear today. The club has intense rivalries with Brighton & Hove Albion, Millwall, and Charlton Athletic, reflecting the strong footballing traditions in South London.
